Featherbed Farm is located in historic
Gloucester County in South East Virginia along the York River. I settled here in Gloucester County some 15 years or so ago
and don't intend to leave. Our Farm is a mere 20 acres, give or take a bit, mostly wooded and bordered on one side by creeks
and marsh land stemming from the Severn River.

My name is Stephanie Hicks and I live here at Featherbed
Farm with a rather large collection of 4-legged friends and a not as large collection of 2-legged friends and family. I am not the head cook and chief bottle washer around here
though, that honor goes to Ron Lowe. He is always here to lend a hand at feeding and kidding time as well as the day to day
upkeep involved when you have a hobby that is as time consuming as a full time job. Ron also has another interest, I hope
someday he gets the chance to enjoy, motorcycles. Our room mates Rudy and Tara Tibbetts are as well a blessing to have here.
In times of need they are always johnny-on- the-spot, even delivering their first set of twin baby does, good job guys! I've
enjoyed their short stay immensely and will dread their imminent departure this summer.
Our goat adventures started in 1998 when I started raising Pygmy
Goats. We still have a small herd and
occasionally breed a doe just to have the charming little ones around, but the Nigerians are my favorite and the main interest
of our farm. Our main goal at this time is to focus on the overall improvement of our herd with their conformation, general
appearance, dairy character, and certainly their ability to produce milk. We are trying to build a small, select herd that
can compete in the show ring as well as produce on the milk stand. We, like most breeders, have spent considerable time researching
the pedigrees of countless animals on countless farms trying to put together that magic formula that produces the perfect
goat, only to find ourselves back at the drawing board countless times. I have come to the conclusion that if I put two animals
together that I admire greatly, the results more often than not are pleasing to me and ultimately I'm the one that will have
to live with the results. If a judge at the show likes what I've brought to them, thats icing on the cake, if someone wants
to own the results, than thats fine too. I want
to look out of my window at my herd and like what I see... That’s
my breeding plan in a nut shell.
In 2008 our entire herd tested negative for TB/Bru/CAE. We do not intend to sell buck
kids from first fresheners and expect that most of our males will be wethered. We guarantee that all kids sold from our farm will be healthy and free of any disqualifying fault, or the kid will
be replaced.
We also raise a variety of Exhibition Poultry , mostly Bantams including Silkies, Cochin, Faverolles, and hopefully
soon Dutch Bantams. We are members of The American Bantam Association and the American Silkie Bantam Club. We have recently had the pleasure of attending and participating
in a few poultry shows, we really enjoyed the time well spent with some very interesting and down to earth folks and we're
certain that "chicken shows" will soon become a bigger part of our lives.
At this time I would like to take the opportunity to thank friends and family for all their help, love and support. Thank
you Geoff and Rudy, the Milking stand is a great help! Aiden, my Grandson, can be seen in many of the pictures on our pages as he is growing up with the animals and
loves them as well. I would also like to thank the breeders who have made it possible to obtain the wonderful goats we have.
The long hours and hard work that they have encountered only makes our job here that much easier. Thank you for your endless
patience with my question and concerns. The opportunities that you made possible for us are evident in the pedigrees and the
quality of the animals we have purchased from you, Robert and Janet Shlanta, Springs Run, and Judy Ratcliffe, 4 Fun Farm.
Last but not least, in fact most importantly, my dear friend and mentor, Pat Hellebrandt, Gatekeepers Farm. Thanks Pat for
sharing your endless knowledge of Goats and countless late night trips to save my girls from my ignorance. To you I dedicate
this Web Site. You will always have my deepest Admiration.
